Manager constantly interrupts employee with messages, sometimes reaching 20 messages in 30 minutes: 'They take time, and I stop whatever task I’m working on to reply'

  • Boss messages me constantly during work hours.

I'm in a new ish role, been about 6 months since I started. my boss who claims they are not a micro manager, cannot let me work.
  • we have check ins 3x a week over virtual meetings (WFH). this already seemed like a lot to me- previously role was weekly or bi weekly. ohtside of that, I am receiving teams messages from them ALLLL day long. even when we're both in a meeting.
  • these messages are typically questions that take a bit of investigation, some are light analytics questions. they take time, and I stop whatever task I'm working on to reply. yesterday I counted and I received 20 messages from them in a half hour period. sometimes I stop replying while i am focused, and end up needing to reply to 10+ questions in one long message when I get back to them.
  • how do I make this stop?? I feel so unproductive. I'm the top of person that if a manager asks me for something, that request takes immediate priority in my brain even if it's not that important
  • Commenters gave them trick and tips on how to handle this situation.

wil... You got to train them - Its called Managing Up (lots of things online about that). If you are in a meeting, dont respond to those messages. during the meeting unless its absolutely urgent. If they need information, they should've prepared it before hand instead of making it your problem in
  • that moment. Also, its just rude to the meeting host if someone is visibly typing, responding on their phone, etc. If you aren't in a meeting, have a set time block each day where you respond to emails or messages. I roughly follow this -
  • -If i receive a message after i leave in the evening - i respond 730a-8a (this one i drop after i become comfortable in a workplace. people have 8 hours to get with me, if they wait till overnight then thats on them, im not devoting any time off the clock in thinking how im going to respond)
  • -If i receive a message during the morning - I respond 1130a-12p -If i receive a message in afternoon I respond 430- 5pm - I dont tell anyone my framework, but if i/you ever got called on not being
  • responsive then feel free to share it with them. Within a day or two people have figured out for themselves that even if you dont respond to you in that moment, you will get back to them before lunch or before you leave for the day.
  • A woman sitting in front of a computer looks stressed
  • Be... Try responding differently. "I'm currently working on X, do you want me to put that on hold to do this first?" "Sorry, I was in a meeting. Do you still need this? If so, it's going to delay X"
  • If there are too many interruptions, start asking the boss for prioritizations. If he's going to micromanage, make him actually manage instead of just piling on extra work "I'm still working on Y. I can take care of this next, but I still haven't started X, which is what I was doing before Y became an issue. What would be your priorities for them?"
  • "FYI, because of X, Y, and Z I wasn't able to get to to A or B today, etc
  • SPECIAL_FAPIAO Start taking longer and longer to reply. If questioned, explain that you were head down in <insert current task here>.
  • Neutraali request takes immediate priority in my brain even if it's not that important He's only swallowing up all your time because you allow him to.
  • • If he sends 10+ . messages, only reply to the latest one • Ignore him entirely if . you're in a meeting • Mark yourself as . "busy" or "away" if you're focusing on something important; ignore Teams
  • Traditional Tackle1 I had a boss like this, I lasted 3 months before I found another job. Aint nobody got time for that!
  • d-cent Start scheduling yourself in Teams hour plus long meetings for you to focus on work. Name it whatever project you are working on. Then setup teams to not send you messages and give auto-replies that you are in a meeting.
  • funktopus I had a boss like that. Would call out from his office. Where we at? How we looking? Constantly. I would always respond with wrong. answers then tell him I can work or I can answer his dumbass questions. He still did it and eventually I got the other supervisors to give him wrong answers too.
  • This was a place that customized PCs for sales demos in the 90's. The annoying boss replaced the boss that everyone liked. It was a fun 8 months of everyone grinding out annoying boss until he quit.
  • swordofthemid-m... Your Boss is incompetent.
  • mrrichiet As people have said you're allowing this. On the bright side, I bet he thinks you're awesome!
